Methodology
EV Assumptions
- Home charger: 7 kW (typical home wallbox)
- Usable battery per session: 35 kWh (assumes you don't drain to 0%)
- Home charging algorithm: Fills cheapest electricity rate bands first (e.g. night rate), then spills into more expensive bands if needed
- Standing charges: Not included — these are the same regardless of how you fuel your car
Petrol & Diesel Assumptions
- Small car: 6.0 L/100km (petrol), 4.8 L/100km (diesel)
- Medium car: 7.5 L/100km (petrol), 5.8 L/100km (diesel)
- Large car: 9.5 L/100km (petrol), 7.5 L/100km (diesel)
Petrol Equivalent Explained
- The "Petrol equivalent" figure on each result card shows what you'd need petrol to cost per litre to match that EV running cost
- For example, if a tariff shows "€0.30/L petrol equivalent", it means charging your EV on that tariff costs the same per km as petrol would at €0.30/L
