Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dynamic electricity tariff?

A dynamic tariff charges a unit rate that tracks the half-hourly wholesale electricity price (plus a base rate), so what you pay rises and falls with the market through the day.

Do I need a smart meter for a dynamic tariff?

Yes. Dynamic tariffs are billed on half-hourly readings, so you need a smart meter that is registered and reading in half-hourly (interval) mode, with strong (level-4) connectivity.

When are tomorrow's prices published?

Usually about 11:45 am Irish time.

Can the price go negative?

The wholesale price can occasionally go negative when there is more generation (often wind) than demand. The all-in rate you pay still includes the supplier's fixed component, so it rarely turns negative, but it can fall very low at those times.

Are these the same as Day/Night/Peak smart tariffs?

No. Day/Night/Peak smart tariffs charge fixed rates within set time bands. Dynamic tariffs track the live wholesale price every half hour. Many dynamic suppliers still apply standard smart bands to their fixed component, which is why a band still affects the rate shown here.

How are the rates calculated?

Each all-in rate combines two parts: the supplier's base component and the live wholesale price:
rate (c/kWh) = base component (VAT-inc) + (wholesale €/MWh ÷ 10) × 1.09

How are export rates calculated?

Dynamic export rates are the sum of the wholesale price and supplier's base export base rate (which can be zero). VAT is not applicable. This page also shows fixed (non-dynamic) export rates for dyanmic import tariffs with fixed export rates.

Where do the wholesale prices come from?

Wholesale prices come from the Irish day-ahead electricity market. Next-day prices are published once that market clears around midday, so this page usually shows tomorrow's full curve by about 11:45 am Irish time.

Will switching to a dynamic tariff save me money?

That depends entirely on your electricity usage pattern. Kilowatt.ie lets you run a custom electricity price comparison to find out if a dynamic tariff would be the cheapest option based on your specific electricity usage profile.
