Privacy Policy

Overview

Your privacy is important to us at Kilowatt.ie. This policy explains how we handle your personal information and your rights concerning that information.

Kilowatt.ie collects personal and contact information solely for the purpose of facilitating your quote request to solar installers and insurance brokers.

The site uses privacy-by-design so that your data is as secure as possible. This includes:

About This Website

This energy price comparison website, with the address https://kilowatt.ie, is created and owned by Dominic Ó Gallachóir (sole trader).

Registered address: Entrance 1, 41 Zakaria Paliashvili Str., Vake, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia

Cookies

We do not use cookies for tracking, advertising, analytics, or to recognise you between visits.

The only cookie set by this website is a temporary session cookie (PHPSESSID) on the solar and insurance quote-request form pages. It contains a random ID, no personal data, and exists solely to prevent the form being submitted twice by mistake. It is deleted automatically when you close your browser.

Security

This website is served over HTTPS, ensuring all data transmitted between your browser and our server is encrypted.

Types of Data We Collect

Quote request data: If you request solar or insurance quotes through our website, we collect your name, email address, phone number, and any details you provide about your property or request (e.g. Eircode, type of cover, whether you want a battery included with a solar installation).

Types of Data We DON'T Collect

Smart meter data for price comparisons: If you choose to upload your smart meter data (via a Harmonised Downloadable File from ESB Networks) to generate a personalised price comparison, this data is processed entirely within your web browser. No smart meter data is ever sent to or received by Kilowatt.ie. The comparison calculation happens on your device, and the results are displayed to you and only you. This means Kilowatt.ie never sees, stores, or processes your MPRN, half-hourly consumption data, or any other personal smart meter or other electricity usage information.

How We Use Your Data

Quote requests: When you request a solar quote, we forward your details to up to three solar installers operating in Ireland. When you request an insurance quote, we forward your details to our partner Irish insurance broker (regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland). In both cases, we are paid on a per-request basis by the installer or broker.

We do not use your data for marketing emails, and we do not share your information with any party other than the solar installers or insurance broker you have requested we contact.

Data Retention

Smart meter data: As noted above, your smart meter data is processed locally in your browser and is never transmitted to or stored by Kilowatt.ie.

Quote requests: We retain solar and insurance quote request data for 6 months from the date of submission. After this period, all personal data is securely deleted.

Your Data Protection Rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Irish data protection law, you have the following rights:

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at dominic@kilowatt.ie.

International Data Transfers

As the Data Controller is located in the Republic of Georgia, your personal data is transferred outside the European Economic Area (EEA). This transfer is necessary to perform the service you requested (providing solar or insurance quotes). We rely on Article 49(1)(b) of the GDPR for this transfer, as it is essential for the implementation of pre-contractual measures taken at your request.

Legal Basis for Processing

We process your data under Article 6(1)(b) of the GDPR (Processing is necessary for the performance of a contract). By submitting a quote request, you are entering into a pre-contractual arrangement where we act as a bridge to solar installers or insurance brokers.

Complaints

If you have concerns about how we handle your personal data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Commission (Ireland):
